Regent revokes logging permits<\/p>\n
PADANG, West Sumatra: The Mentawai Islands Regent Edison
\nSaleleubaja has revoked all permits for timber concessions that
\nhe issued during 2004-2005 period.<\/p>\n
In the decision, the regent ordered all permit holders to stop
\nfelling trees and pay the state their obligations based on the
\namount of cubic meters they had already obtained. He also
\nassigned the regency's forestry office to take necessary steps to
\nconduct technical inspections of the sites.<\/p>\n
When contacted by phone to confirm the decision on Sunday, the
\nregent declined to comment, but the regency's council speaker,
\nKortanius Sabeleakek, admitted he had received a copy of the
\ndecision.<\/p>\n
\"The move to revoke the permits is likely related to media
\nreports which questioned the 'zero' revenue from the forestry
\nsector, even though the regent has issued many permits for timber
\nconcessions each year, not to mention protests by students and
\ntribal communities to revoke the permits,\" Kortanius said. -- JP<\/p>",
