Regent escapes through back door<\/p>\n
BOGOR: Bogor Regent Agus Utara Efendi slipped out the back
\ndoor of the local council building on Friday to avoid hundreds of
\nParung market vendors protesting plans to evict them to make way
\nfor the construction of a shopping mall.<\/p>\n
The regent was attending a meeting to endorse 11 new bylaws
\nwhen the traders, most of them women, arrived at the building.<\/p>\n
Aware that the regent was in the building, the protesters
\nrequested a meeting with him.<\/p>\n
When the meeting ended, however, the regent slipped out of the
\nroom and left the building through the back door. Dozens of women
\nattempted in vain to stop him, and several threw mineral water
\nbottles at his departing car.<\/p>\n
The head of the Parung traders communication forum, Mad Husen,
\nsaid the vendors had repeatedly asked the council and the regency
\nadministration to delay the construction of the Parung Indah Mall
\nuntil 2007.<\/p>\n
Neneng, 39, who sells clothes at Parung market, said the
\nvendors wanted the construction to be postponed because they did
\nnot have the money to buy kiosks at the new mall, which would
\ncost millions of rupiah each.--JP<\/p>",
