SURABAYA: East Java Governor Imam Utomo has entrusted the
\nprolonged dispute over the election of the Sampang regent in
\nMadura to the local legislative council, who will decide whether
\nor not to hold the elections again.<\/p>\n
Imam said on Tuesday that the minister of home affairs had the
\nauthority to settle the debate over the validity of regent-elect
\nFadhilah Budiono.<\/p>\n
\"If the local legislative council plans to repeat the election
\nprocess, just go ahead. It's the council itself which has the
\npower to do it,\" the governor said.<\/p>\n
Imam made the remarks in response to a demand by 300 Muslim
\nulemas from Sampang, who agreed with the idea of repeating the
\nelection process.<\/p>\n
\"The election should be held again to help end the dispute in
\nSampang, thereby preventing it from hindering development of the
\nlocal social welfare programs,\" the ulemas said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Fadhilah, who was elected Sampang regent last September, has
\nyet to be inaugurated following protests from several factions at
\nthe local legislative council that the election result was not
\nvalid because two councillors who had resigned from the council

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: Haze blanketing the South
\nKalimantan capital of Banjarmasin welcomed Vice President Hamzah
\nHaz and his entourage when they arrived at Syamsuddin Noor
\nairport on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The haze was thicker than in previous days despite recent
\nrainfall.<\/p>\n
\"Indeed, the haze is thicker than in previous days,\" Nanang, a
\ntower monitoring staff member at the Syamsuddin Noor Airport told
\nThe Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Despite its density, however, the haze did not interfere with
\nflight schedules to and from the airport, Nanang said.<\/p>\n
Monitoring results showed that Wednesday's thick haze was a
\nresult of dried rice stalks being burned in northern, eastern and
\nsouthern parts of Banjarmasin.<\/p>\n
\"The farmers burned the stalks to clean up the rice fields
\nafter the harvest season,\" he said.<\/p>\n
During his visit to the province, Hamzah inaugurated an 18-
\nkilometer road heading to Trisakti Seaport in Banjarmasin.<\/p>\n
He met several religious figures and members of his United
\nDevelopment Party (PPP), and visited the grave of local religious

SURABAYA: The police have shot Mar San, a marine deserter, on
\nJl. Sumoharjo here for his alleged involvement in a major robbery
\nin Bogor, West Java, East Java police chief Insp. Gen. Sutanto
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Sutanto explained that with the capture of Mar San, believed
\nto be the mastermind of the robbery, police have managed to
\narrest five of the 10 suspects.<\/p>\n
\"We are still hunting down five other suspects,\" he was quoted
\nby Antara as saying on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Mar San and his accomplices managed steal Rp 1.8 billion
\n(US$195,600) from employees of garment manufacturing company PT
\nGreat River Indonesia on Aug. 31.<\/p>\n
The robbers were extremely vicious, killing a security guard
\nand a police officer safeguarding the cash.<\/p>\n
Mar San, who used to be a marine company commander, was shot
\non Tuesday in a joint operation between the East and West Java
\npolice, Sutanto said, adding that the suspect is now being
\ntreated at Bhayangkara Hospital in Surabaya.<\/p>\n

BANYUMAS, Central Java (JP): Teachers' protests continued on
\nWednesday, with some 700 teachers rallying at the Banyumas
\nRegency Legislative Council to demand the disbursement of their
\nback pay dating back to January 2001 and allowances.<\/p>\n
\"We want the local administration pay our back pay since
\nJanuary this year,\" the coordinator of the protesting teachers,
\nGandang Panilih, said.<\/p>\n
\"We also want the local administration to pay the same
\nallowances as other school staff have received,\" he added.<\/p>\n
He cited a Rp 180,000 (US$20) allowance received by a head of
\nan administrative department of a school, saying teachers should
\nbe entitled to the same allowance from the government.<\/p>\n
The teachers were eventually received by speaker of
\nlegislative council Tri Waluyo Basuki. The meeting is still in
\nprogress.<\/p>\n
Previously, Banyumas Regent Aris Setiono told the teachers
\nthat their back pay would be disbursed in mid October.<\/p>\n
