Palangka Raya (ANTARA) - The Regent of East Kotawaringin, Central\nKalimantan, Halikinnor, has directly instructed and monitored the\noperation of two excavators to create canals and firebreaks. This\nmeasure is intended to secure the Flight Operation Safety Zone (KKOP) of\nHaji Asan Sampit Airport from forest and land fires (karhutla).<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo excavators are being used to create firebreak canals and roads\nfor our officers, making it easier to extinguish land fires in deeper\nareas,\u201d said Halikinnor in Sampit on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Based on Law Number 1 of 2009 concerning Aviation, the KKOP is a\nterritory comprising land, water, and\/or airspace around an airport used\nfor flight operations to ensure aviation safety and security.<\/p>\n
The recent surge in forest and land fires has been acknowledged to\nhave impacted flight activities at Haji Asan Sampit Airport. Dense haze\nhas previously caused aircraft to cancel landings and subsequent flights\nto be delayed or cancelled.<\/p>\n
Responding to this situation, Halikinnor has ordered that the\nhandling of forest and land fires around the airport be intensified,\nparticularly within the KKOP area. Naturally, fire prevention efforts in\nother locations are also being maximised.<\/p>\n
To this end, two excavators have been deployed as part of an effort\nto increase the security of the KKOP against forest fires. The hope is\nthat the area will be kept free from fires and haze so that aviation\nactivities are not disrupted.<\/p>\n
According to Halikinnor, the excavators are creating canals that\nserve as roads and firebreaks to prevent fire from spreading if a land\nfire occurs. These breaks are being constructed around critical\nlocations that must be secured for flight safety.<\/p>\n
In addition to creating firebreaks, the two excavators are also\nsearching for locations suitable for the construction of reservoirs\n(embung). If a sufficiently low-lying area is found, it will be\nexcavated to serve as a water source to facilitate land fire\nsuppression.<\/p>\n
The Head of the Department of Water Resources, Highways,\nConstruction, Public Housing, and Settlement Areas (SDABMB ext{MBKPRKP})\nof East Kotawaringin, Mentana Dhinar Tistama, is optimistic that this\nstep will be effective in securing the area from forest fires so that\nflight activities are no longer disrupted.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe initial estimate for the firebreak canal is approximately one\nkilometre, stretching from Tjilik Riwut Road to Jaksa Road.
