Regent denies killing journo<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Sri Roso Sudarmo, who was temporarily removed as
\nBantul regent Wednesday, vehemently denied yesterday that he was
\ninvolved in the highly publicized 1996 murder of Bernas daily's
\njournalist Fuad Muhammad Syafruddin, alias Udin.<\/p>\n
\"How am I supposed defend myself anymore? Of course I deny it
\n(the allegation),\" Sri Roso told reporters after surrendering his
\npost to Governor Paku Alam III.<\/p>\n
He urged people to presume he was innocent unless a legal
\nprocess could prove otherwise.<\/p>\n
The slain journalist was known to be investigating corruption
\nin the Bantul area when he was murdered.<\/p>\n
\"So, don't accuse me carelessly. This is not a defense, but
\nplease give me a chance to prove my innocence,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sri Roso was formally discharged due to public pressure on the
\ngovernment to investigate him after evidence was uncovered that
\nhe offered a Rp 1 billion \"donation\" to a Soeharto-owned fund in
