Regent can't stop illegal workers<\/p>\n
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: East Flores Regent Hendrikus
\nHengki Mukin said it was practically impossible for him to
\nprevent residents in his regency from working illegally in
\nMalaysia.<\/p>\n
Working in Malaysia -- legally or otherwise -- was a tradition
\namong people in East Flores dating back to the Dutch colonial
\ntimes, he was quoted by Antara as saying yesterday.<\/p>\n
He predicted the number of people seeking work in Malaysia was
\nlikely to increase once the new liner --KM Sirimau -- began
\nservice linking Larantuka, an East Flores port town, and Batam,
\njust south of Malaysia.<\/p>\n
He said most people from East Flores entered Malaysia through
\nBatam. \"How can I prevent them from going to Batam?\" he asked.<\/p>\n
Hendrikus said he would encourage people going to Malaysia to
\nuse the legal channels.<\/p>\n
Six East Flores workers were among the hundreds of Indonesians
\ndeported by Malaysia last month for working illegally there.<\/p>\n
Between 15,000 and 20,000 workers from East Flores are
\nbelieved to be in Malaysia, mostly working in plantation and
\nconstruction sectors.<\/p>\n
Hendrikus said, each month these workers sent Rp 200 million
\n($87,000) home to their relatives.<\/p>\n
Many of the houses in Larantuka were built or upgraded with
\nmoney from Malaysia, he said. (13)<\/p>",
