        "content": "<p>Regent can't stop illegal workers<\/p>\n<p>KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara: East Flores Regent Hendrikus<br>\nHengki Mukin said it was practically impossible for him to<br>\nprevent residents in his regency from working illegally in<br>\nMalaysia.<\/p>\n<p>Working in Malaysia -- legally or otherwise -- was a tradition<br>\namong people in East Flores dating back to the Dutch colonial<br>\ntimes, he was quoted by Antara as saying yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>He predicted the number of people seeking work in Malaysia was<br>\nlikely to increase once the new liner --KM Sirimau -- began<br>\nservice linking Larantuka, an East Flores port town, and Batam,<br>\njust south of Malaysia.<\/p>\n<p>He said most people from East Flores entered Malaysia through<br>\nBatam. \"How can I prevent them from going to Batam?\" he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Hendrikus said he would encourage people going to Malaysia to<br>\nuse the legal channels.<\/p>\n<p>Six East Flores workers were among the hundreds of Indonesians<br>\ndeported by Malaysia last month for working illegally there.<\/p>\n<p>Between 15,000 and 20,000 workers from East Flores are<br>\nbelieved to be in Malaysia, mostly working in plantation and<br>\nconstruction sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Hendrikus said, each month these workers sent Rp 200 million<br>\n($87,000) home to their relatives.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the houses in Larantuka were built or upgraded with<br>\nmoney from Malaysia, he said.
