Regency suspends sand quarrying<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Riau administration has halted sand
\nquarrying and sand exports to Singapore indefinitely, regent
\nMuhammad Sani announced on Monday.<\/p>\n
The regent said that the suspension, effective as from early
\nJuly, was aimed at improving the regulation of the regency's sand
\nindustry, which he blamed to have caused severe environmental
\ndamage.<\/p>\n
Poor licensing procedures and supervision had enabled some
\nirresponsible sand companies to freely operate in the area
\nwithout any environmental awareness, he said.<\/p>\n
The move was also expected to prop up sand prices, he said.<\/p>\n
\"We have made the move to help restore the environment and to
\nraise sand prices,\" he was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Muhammad said during the suspension period, the administration
\nwould select companies that would be allowed to continue
\noperating.<\/p>\n
\"Any companies daring to continue operating during the period
\nof suspension will have their licenses revoked,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Sand is one of the regency's main exports and is virtually all
\nexported to Singapore to support the island state's construction
