        "content": "<p>Refugee children missing school<\/p>\n<p>TERNATE, Maluku: At least 5,750 children from the Malifut<br>\ndistrict of Halmahera Island in North Maluku who fled here to<br>\nescape riots on Halmahera, have not returned to the classroom<br>\ndespite the official start of the school year.<\/p>\n<p>Antara reported on Monday that neither the central government<br>\nor the provincial administration had taken steps to provide for<br>\nthe children&apos;s education.<\/p>\n<p>The school year officially began on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The children fled with their parents following riots which hit<br>\nHalmahera last week.<\/p>\n<p>Wahab Conoras of the North Maluku Social Services Office said<br>\nthe administration was doing its best to meet the needs of the<br>\nrefugees, however the priorities were food and shelter.<\/p>\n<p>He pledged the administration would coordinate further with<br>\nthe local education office.<\/p>\n<p>Some 1,460 houses and 16 public buildings were burned during<br>\nthe riots on Halmahera.
