Reform starts with oneself<\/p>\n

For months, students and lecturers have voiced demands for
\nreform at many universities. The ramifications are heard
\nthroughout Indonesia and even the entire world.<\/p>\n
Demands comprise economic, political and legal reforms, and
\nalso a change in the national leadership.<\/p>\n
Now, Soeharto has resigned as president, a noble attitude of a
\nsuperior statesman in the country's interest. We will always
\nremember and appreciate his great achievements. Although his
\nresignation was precipitated by the uncertain economic situation
\nand the demand for total reform, we should not forget that reform
\nstarts from within ourselves, our families, immediate community
\ncircles and all elements of the nation.<\/p>\n
If we continuously reform ourselves from bad to good morals,
\npeace will be created automatically and unity will be maintained
\nwithout other people reminding and motivating us.<\/p>\n
Tragic events in Medan, Jakarta, Surakarta and other places
\nare still fresh in our memory. They occurred due to degenerated
\nmorals and a loss of spiritual balance, allowing evildoers to
\ngive free rein to their yearnings and denying religion, law and
\nethics.<\/p>\n
This disrupts established order. As a nation with dignity, we
\nshould not lose our identity. The present situation is not our
\nwill. We must exert patience and wisdom. We pray that things will
\nsoon improve.<\/p>\n
As an ordinary citizen who is part of this nation and who also
\nloves reform, I appeal to students and reform leaders not to go
\nonto the streets. This would constitute potential danger because
\nthe situation could be used by irresponsible people.<\/p>\n
Who is responsible for the riots and all the losses? Morally,
\nwe all may be.<\/p>\n
