        "content": "<p>Reform needed<\/p>\n<p>The urgent need for reform cannot be denied, if only Indonesia<br>\ncan survive the present monetary crisis. Indeed, many think that<br>\neconomic and monetary reform alone are not sufficient to overcome<br>\nthe current turmoil. Political reform is also urgently required.<\/p>\n<p>I believe the government agrees with the need to initiate<br>\neconomic and political reform. Some time ago, I wrote in this<br>\npaper (Jan. 7) that greed was the most likely root of the current<br>\nproblems. The reform package must therefore also address social<br>\nand cultural issues surrounding greed. Action is required to<br>\nnullify the adverse cultural developments witnessed in this<br>\ncountry over the past 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Socially there are two groups: the ruling elite and<br>\nbureaucracy, and the subordinate people. We all know that<br>\nofficially sovereignty lies in the hands of the people, but in<br>\nreality, governance is almost always a top-down process. In many<br>\ncases people are only the object and not the subject. This<br>\nprocess must be reversed. Let the people's voice be heard now.<br>\nLet the people hold their sovereignty in the true sense.<\/p>\n<p>Socially and culturally the ruling elite has become too<br>\npowerful for the people and it is always the government's will or<br>\ninterpretation that prevails. The \"yes man\" attitude, safe<br>\nplaying, hypocrisy, corruption, collusion, hooliganism and<br>\nfeudalism in the bureaucracy should be totally banished.<\/p>\n<p>Also, clean government is a must for this country in order to<br>\nensure victory, success, prosperity for the whole nation, justice<br>\nand stability.<\/p>\n<p>H.W.
