Reform heroes on the Website<\/p>\n
Farewell, heroes of reform. The tragic deaths of our young
\ncolleagues Hery Hartanto, Elang Mulya, Hafidin Royan and
\nHendriawan Lesmana at Trisakti University on the evening of May
\n12, 1998, will always remain in the hearts of the Indonesian
\npeople.<\/p>\n
This brutal action must not be repeated. In order to
\ncontinuously kindle the spirit of settling problems without
\nviolence, I propose that related organizations, such as the
\nTrisakti alumni association, or Trisakti University itself, build
\na monument for the heroes.<\/p>\n
The monument could take the form of an Internet Website, that
\nis, a communication media on a global, egalitarian and democratic
\nscale, in line with the great ideas struggled for by the people,
\nIndonesian students and the late reform heroes.<\/p>\n
The technology and character of the Website make it possible
\nto relate comprehensively to the tragic event through eyewitness
\nstories, reminiscences of fellow students and teachers and
\nspeeches by reform activists. Pilgrims worldwide could also write
\ntheir impressions on the Web memorial.<\/p>\n
I know there is some controversy in my suggestion. There is a
\npossibility that, at the Website, memorabilia like T-shirts,
\npins, pens, mugs, photos and other objects depicting the heroes
\nwill be sold. The objection may be that the fund-raising would be
\na \"sadistic\" endeavor because it commercializes the sadness of
\nthe families left behind.<\/p>\n
This suggestion is based on good intentions. The funds
\ncollected in a transparent and professional way can be used for
\nnoble causes to honor our reform heroes. It might be possible to
\ngrant scholarships to students with high achievements to study at
\nTrisakti University, mainly children of Armed Forces members.<\/p>\n
Touching background stories such as the empathy and hard work
\nof women and volunteers, tenaciously and unquestioningly keeping
\nthe logistics flowing for students at historical moments when
\ndemonstrating at the MPR\/DPR building, show that our nation has
\nextraordinary noble energy. It is their example that has
\ngenerated this small suggestion with a view to a Web memorial for
\nour reform heroes, in order that they be always remembered and
\nmade examples of.<\/p>\n
