Reforestation<\/p>\n
I would like to inquire whether banking institutions could
\nsupport the activity of planting a billion trees in order to
\nsafeguard the quality of air.<\/p>\n
Bank Indonesia backed by all banks, private and government,
\nhave supported the savings campaign in the National Savings Week
\nin August\/September for a number of years.<\/p>\n
Related activities included visits to schools to inform
\nstudents about saving, banking and government development.
\nCompetitions were held in sports, poetry reading, etc.<\/p>\n
We hope there will be a change of activities in the near
\nfuture. It will be useful to also give information on replanting
\nprograms, reforestation and planting trees on arid land. Bank
\nIndonesia governor Sudradjad Djiwandono should see that the
\nphilosophy of replanting is similar to that underlying saving of
\nmoney. Planting will yield crops, wood, fruit, etc.<\/p>\n
The whole Indonesian population is responsible for keeping the
\nenvironment clean. The tree planting project launched by the
\nPresident in January 1992 has not yet reached its target. Part of
\nthe population is not aware of the project's aim and benefits.<\/p>\n
The companies involved in burning the forests in their land
\nclearing activities are bank customers.<\/p>\n
State Minister for the Environment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja along
\nwith Sudradjad Djiwandono can work out a joint program to impose
\non companies exploiting forests to boost the government program
\nof planting a billion trees.<\/p>\n
