Reflexology cures a wide variety of illnesses<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Edo grimaced as Sahibi Mudasir massaged his left
\nfoot. Edo shook his head, closed his eyes and then opened his
\nmouth. Nothing came out.<\/p>\n
Mudasir was massaging the young man's foot to cure him of
\nmyopia. No ordinary masseur. He is a reflexologist.<\/p>\n
\"In the beginning you will feel a lot of pain, but after you
\ncome here several times, you get used to it,\" Mudasir assured,
\ndigging his fingers into his patient's left foot.<\/p>\n
\"This is the center of the nerve that affects your right eye,\"
\nhe explained as Edo yelped.<\/p>\n
\"The one that affects the left eye is on the right foot.\"<\/p>\n
According to Mudasir, the pressure will activate nerves and
\nimprove the patient's vision.<\/p>\n
\"This will reactivate the organs which are not active,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Several books have been published about the popular massage
\ntherapy. In Body Reflexology, Healing at Your Fingertips, Milfred
\nCarter and Tammy Weber explain that the body is like an
\nelectrical system with many \"on\" and \"off\" switches.<\/p>\n
They say there are main circuits to every organ, gland and
\nnerve, with circuit breakers in the hands, feet and other body
\nparts.<\/p>\n
The pressure sends a healing force to all parts of the body by
\nopening up closed electrical lines that have shut off the
\nuniversal life force.<\/p>\n
The treatment works on many of Mudasir's patients, like Ahmad,
\nan office worker, who said the massage cured his
\nshortsightedness. But not all patients are satisfied.<\/p>\n
Sari, a teenager, complained that there was no improvement in
\nher sight even though she had been massaged several times. But
\nshe admitted that unlike Ahmad, she did not see Mudasir
\nregularly.<\/p>\n
\"You have to be persistent,\" Mudasir insisted.<\/p>\n
Patients are required to visit once a week.<\/p>\n
Mudasir said he had cured people of cancer, cataracts, polio,
\ndigestion problems and had even healed paralyzed children.<\/p>\n
\"But based on my experience, I can't cure patients with
\nserious liver problems who need blood washing,\" he said, without
\nexplaining why.<\/p>\n
His patients include a high-ranking army officer, some doctors
\nand several foreigners.<\/p>\n
One of the doctors, a diabetic, came to Mudasir because he did
\nnot want to take synthetic drugs.<\/p>\n
\"The doctor said that the chemicals were poison,\" Mudasir
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The 56-year-old reflexologist only gives patients suffering
\nfrom serious diseases like cancer or diabetes traditional
\nmedicine. He concocts some of the medicine himself.<\/p>\n
Mudasir learned the art of reflexology in 1985 from his now
\nretired elder brother Amir Mudasir.<\/p>\n
Mudasir used to be a physics teacher at a junior high school
\nuntil the schoolwarden came to him asking for money to help cure
\nhis mother's swollen and red feet.<\/p>\n
\"I didn't have any money and I couldn't take her to my brother
\nbecause she was really ill,\" he said. \"I thought it would be good
\nif I could massage her.\"<\/p>\n
So Mudasir took a crash course in massage from his brother
\nthat afternoon and practiced on the schoolwarden's mother. He
\ndidn't even know the name of the disease, but she recovered the
\nday after his massage.<\/p>\n
The news spread throughout the school and he then became the
\nschool's \"doctor\".<\/p>\n
Two years later, after curing a student of polio, Mudasir
\nbecame determined to be a professional reflexologist. He retired
\nin 1992 and began practicing reflexology full-time.<\/p>\n
Before leaving his school he taught the craft to a few
\ncolleagues. Although three teachers were interested in
\nreflexology, only one was successful, he said.<\/p>\n
One of his relatives, a doctor, also tried to learn
\nreflexology, but failed.<\/p>\n
\"Special talent is required,\" he vouched, adding that he would
\nshare his skill with anyone who really wants to learn about the
\ntherapy.<\/p>\n
