But we must ask, are we
really independent? If we analyze the situation carefully we find
that a lot of policies were made under the influence of foreign
powers. In the economic sector, for example, various subsidies
were lifted because of pressure from foreign countries. Also,
many of the state's assets have been sold too cheaply to foreign
buyers, Semen Gresik and Indosat are but two examples. The
airplane manufacturer PT Dirgantara -- currently experiencing
problems because of strikes -- will also be sold to a foreign
company. What is left for Indonesia when everything is pawned to
foreigners? Indonesia has always been known as a rich country.
But the fact is we cannot enjoy our own resources.

Culturally, foreign (or western) influence is also
predominant. Television programs introduces western values, even
to the remotest part of the country. These programs have led to
the moral and mental decadence of Indonesians. In the name of
freedom of expression, all kinds of commercials and programs are
aired throughout the country.

Given this situation, is it still appropriate for us to be
festive on Aug. 17, our Independence Day? It is time for all
Muslims in this country to work hard and end this harmful
situation. We must give our best to our country, in all aspects
of life.

IRFAN BUDIMAN
Bandung
",
