Reflection on independence<\/p>\n

When Aug. 17 arrives each year we celebrate our independence
\nat many locations across the country. But we must ask, are we
\nreally independent? If we analyze the situation carefully we find
\nthat a lot of policies were made under the influence of foreign
\npowers. In the economic sector, for example, various subsidies
\nwere lifted because of pressure from foreign countries. Also,
\nmany of the state's assets have been sold too cheaply to foreign
\nbuyers, Semen Gresik and Indosat are but two examples. The
\nairplane manufacturer PT Dirgantara -- currently experiencing
\nproblems because of strikes -- will also be sold to a foreign
\ncompany. What is left for Indonesia when everything is pawned to
\nforeigners? Indonesia has always been known as a rich country.
\nBut the fact is we cannot enjoy our own resources.<\/p>\n
Culturally, foreign (or western) influence is also
\npredominant. Television programs introduces western values, even
\nto the remotest part of the country. These programs have led to
\nthe moral and mental decadence of Indonesians. In the name of
\nfreedom of expression, all kinds of commercials and programs are
\naired throughout the country.<\/p>\n
Given this situation, is it still appropriate for us to be
\nfestive on Aug. 17, our Independence Day? It is time for all
\nMuslims in this country to work hard and end this harmful
\nsituation. We must give our best to our country, in all aspects
\nof life.<\/p>\n
