        "content": "<p>Redundant posts may be abolished<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Industry Tunky Ariwibowo has<br>\nsuggested that the government abolish many administrative posts<br>\npertaining to industry at both the provincial and regency levels<br>\nwhich, he said, are redundant.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a workshop for officials of the Ministry of<br>\nIndustry, Tunky said Monday that currently there is a duplication<br>\nof official posts, both at the provincial and regency levels,<br>\nconcerned with industrial matters. Posts under his ministry are<br>\nin many cases matched by a similar post under a provincial<br>\ngovernor's office or that of a regent, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The minister suggested that the industry offices under the<br>\nprovincial and regency administrations be abolished in order to<br>\nreduce costs.<\/p>\n<p>\"If there is only one post and the system is right, the<br>\ncurrently much-complained-about high-cost economy can be<br>\navoided,\" Tunky said, as quoted by Antara.<\/p>\n<p>Tunky's suggestion on the abolition of industry offices of<br>\nprovincial and regency administrations contradicts the central<br>\ngovernment's plans to give greater autonomy to local<br>\nadministrations.<\/p>\n<p>Last April, the government launched a pilot project on<br>\nregional autonomy in 26 regencies. Under the program, each agency<br>\nrepresenting a government ministry in the regency is put directly<br>\nunder the command of the regent. These agencies no longer take<br>\ntheir cues from the central government.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-four ministries have agencies at the provincial and<br>\nregency levels. The ministry of industry is one of those which<br>\naccepted the autonomy scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Minister Tunky also called on officials yesterday to<br>\nconsistently uphold the government's policies on industrial<br>\nmatters.<\/p>\n<p>\"Such consistency is very important, because it can influence<br>\nthe pace of business growth... Local officials, please don't be<br>\ninconsistent in executing government policies, because<br>\ninconsistency can cause losses to businesses,\" Tunky said. (rid)<\/p>",
