When I handled administrative matters for a construction
\nlicense in my district office, it took four exhausting days to
\nget one simple stamp. The bureaucratic red tape is eroding the
\nfunction of public service.<\/p>\n
The bureaucratic character of government means citizens end up
\nserving the public servants. Their tendency toward corruption
\nprompts officials to delay things unless rewards are offered,
\nhowever small they may be.<\/p>\n
Consequently, Indonesia has become less attractive as a place
\nfor investments. Some investors choose to relocate their projects
\nto other countries, while others are threatened by business
\nshutdowns.<\/p>\n
The business sector as a major tax contributor is not properly
\nserved, despite the government's often-voiced strong commitment
\nto eradicating corruption and illegal fees. Some business circles
\nhave even threatened to boycott paying taxes.<\/p>\n
With eight years' of financial crises plaguing the country,
\nthe general population's welfare has been sacrificed because of
\nthis corruption. But these days people are becoming more critical
\nand more aware they are being unfairly treated.<\/p>\n
