        "content": "<p>Red Cross-RI airlift for Afghans ends successfully<\/p>\n<p>KABUL (AFP): An airlift of emergency medical supplies, aimed<br>\nat helping those wounded in Afghanistan's long-standing conflict,<br>\nhas been successfully completed by the International Committee of<br>\nthe Red Cross (ICRC), said a Kabul spokesman yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The airlift was carried out with the loan of an Indonesian<br>\nmilitary C-130 aircraft and crew.<\/p>\n<p>\"There were two flights this morning by the Indonesian C-130,<br>\nbringing the total amount of airlifted medical supplies to around<br>\n65 tons,\" said Kabul Red Cross spokesman Jacques Villetaz.<\/p>\n<p>\"The airlift operation has now been successfully completed,<br>\nenabling us to minimize the shortage in medical supplies. But we<br>\nstill need much more for the coming winter,\" Villetaz told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>The Hercules transport aircraft made a total of five flights<br>\nfrom the eastern provincial capital Jalalabad to airbases north<br>\nand south of Kabul, ferrying emergency medical supplies that<br>\naveraged 13 tons each, noted Villetaz.<\/p>\n<p>There was also one mission to the provincial capitals Mazar-i-<br>\nSharif and Herat to transport wheelchairs and crutches for<br>\nvictims of mine explosions. From Herat, nearly nine tons of<br>\nwinter clothing were transported back to Kabul.<\/p>\n<p>Both Indonesian Ambassador Havid Abdulgani and Kabul Red Cross<br>\nchief Peter Stocker were present at Bagram airbase, 50 kilometers<br>\nnorth of Kabul, yesterday to personally thank the Indonesian air<br>\nforce crew of the C-130 for their help.<\/p>\n<p>However, Villetaz said that additional supplies needed to be<br>\ntransported by land routes to ten hospitals in and around Kabul.<\/p>\n<p>Red Cross officials are currently negotiating with the Afghan<br>\nauthorities on arranging convoys of medical assistance, Villetaz<br>\nsaid.<\/p>",
