Red Cross receives Taiwan donation<\/p>\n
MEDAN: The Taiwanese government donated to the Indonesian Red
\nCross on Friday nine tons of food and medicine to help tsunami
\nvictims.<\/p>\n
The aid was symbolically handed over by David Lin, a
\nrepresentative official on economic affairs, to the deputy of
\nNorth Sumatra's Red Cross branch, Adli Lidia, in Polonia, Medan.<\/p>\n
David Lin said the donation had no political considerations
\nbut was based on solidarity. \"This donation is for humanity
\nbecause we also share the grief of the Indonesian people in Aceh
\nand North Sumatra,\" he told journalists.<\/p>\n
Earlier, there was controversy over the aid, which arrived on
\nThursday at Polonia Airport in Medan.<\/p>\n
Director general of information, public diplomacy and
\ninternational treaties at the foreign ministry, Mangasi
\nSihombing, had said the donation would not be accepted by the
\ngovernment because it does not recognize Taiwan as a separate
\nnation from the People's Republic of China.<\/p>\n
\"We have good relations with China and don't want to
\njeopardize them by accepting Taiwan's donation. If they want to
\nhelp, go ahead, but not directly to the Indonesian government but
\nthrough the Indonesian Red Cross,\" he said. -- JP<\/p>",
