Rectors convene over RI's future<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: The country's university rectors convene here to
\nformulate the high-profile vision and mission of the nation and
\nstrategies to approach them in relation to the upcoming July
\npresidential race.<\/p>\n
Results of the meeting -- the Campus Convention for the Future
\nof Indonesia -- will be handed to the elected president.<\/p>\n
\"Universities throughout the country will receive them too, so
\nthat they will be able to play a role as a moral influence on the
\nnew administration,\" said host rector Sofian Effendi of Gadjah
\nMada University.<\/p>\n
The gathering was initiated by the Forum of Indonesian Rectors
\n(FRI) in cooperation with the Indonesian Rector Assembly (MRI).
\nIt was officially closed on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Universities were concerned at the deteriorating political and
\nsocial state of the country and therefore the rectors were called
\nto make a contribution to the country's recovery.<\/p>\n
Scholar Azyumardi Azra, who is also the rector of the
\nIndonesian Islamic University, law expert and human rights
\nfighter Todung Mulya Lubis, Makarim Wibisono of the foreign
\nministry and economist Rizal Ramli were speakers at the
\nconference.<\/p>\n
\"We deliberately did not invite politicians because we want it
\n(the ideas to be formulated) to be purely from an academic
\nperspective,\" Sofian said. --JP<\/p>",
