Rector joins rally<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA (JP): Gadjah Mada University rector Prof. Ichlasul
\nAmal joined university officials and staff members in a protest
\nhere on Saturday against the government's plan to increase the
\nstructural allowance of civil servants by more than 1,000
\npercent.<\/p>\n
More than 1,500 university officials, including lecturers and
\nadministrative staffers, gathered on the campus in front of the
\nCentral Building. They shouted and waved posters, some of which
\nread, \"Delay the Structural Allowance\" and \"Reform is aimed at
\ngiving a prosperous life to people, not officials.\"<\/p>\n
The protest was organized by the Front for Justice and Peace.
\nAll campus activities came to a stop during the action.<\/p>\n
In a speech to the protesters, Amal said the government should
\nrestructure the inefficient bureaucracy before increasing the
\nallowances of government officials.<\/p>\n
\"Increasing salaries is very much correlated to productivity
\nand efficiency. With the current structure of the bureaucracy,
\nincreasing the structural allowance will only waste money,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The head of the university's administrative office, Sutriman,
\nsaid that under the government plan he would receive a monthly
\nallowance of Rp 5 million. He regretted the policy, saying the
\nmoney could be used to improve national education.<\/p>\n
Amal said the rectors of state universities were not included
\nin the government's plan.<\/p>\n
\"Rectors, their deputies and deans will not receive the
