        "content": "<p>Rector enters political jungle<\/p>\n<p>YOGYAKARTA: Rector of the prestigious Gadjah Mada<br>\nUniversity Soekanto Reksohadiprojo frowned yesterday on his<br>\nstudents&apos; objections to his legislative candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>Soekanto told The Jakarta Post the students had the right to<br>\nraise objections but he said he would not change his mind.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The minister of education and culture has already given his<br>\nblessing,&quot; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Soekanto said his candidacy had nothing to do with his<br>\nposition as rector but with his capacity as an individual<br>\ncitizen.<\/p>\n<p>The rector&apos;s name is on the list of legislature candidates<br>\nfrom the ruling Golkar party to represent Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n<p>The students who opposed his candidacy said it would<br>\njeopardize the university&apos;s neutrality. Besides, they said, the<br>\nrector&apos;s popularity would be used by Golkar only to attract<br>\nvotes.<\/p>\n<p>The students filed their petition with the rector Thursday.<br>\nThe statement was signed by Nasrullah, chairman of the student<br>\nsenate.
