Recounting in Central, East Jakarta completed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Provincial Elections Committee here
\nannounced on Monday that the ballot recounting process in Central
\nand East Jakarta has been completed.<\/p>\n
Muchammad Taufik, chairman of the committee's program
\ndivision, said on Monday that the local mayoralty election
\ncommittees had declared the re-count complete after making
\nseveral necessary corrections based on their findings of
\nviolations.<\/p>\n
"We're now waiting for their reports," he said.<\/p>\n
The committees in the city's three other mayoralties will
\nstart the recounting process beginning on Tuesday, Taufik added,
\nwithout saying how long this would take.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Provincial Elections Committee last Friday
\ninstructed all district polling committees in the capital to
\nrecount ballot papers because of irregularities in the initial
\ntallying.<\/p>\n
The following day, Taufik abruptly corrected the decision by
\nsaying that the choice of recounting mechanism was the
\nresponsibility of each district committee, meaning they could
\neither reopen boxes and count all ballot papers again, or simply
\ncheck the tally against earlier documented counts.<\/p>\n
However, when asked for confirmation of the completion of the
\ntally, a member of the East Jakarta poll committee, Dadang
\nIskandar, insisted that the recounting process in the mayoralty
\nwas not yet finished.<\/p>\n
"We still need to recheck and recount as well the ballots from
\nthree of the 10 district committees here. I think we will only
\ncomplete the process tomorrow," Dadang told The Jakarta Post late
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
According to him, most of the irregularities reported in the
\nmayoralty were discrepancies between different ballot tallies at
\ndifferent levels.<\/p>\n
"The irregularities were mostly caused by errors of people,
\nwho have been burdened by heavy workloads, and not because of
\npolitical reasons," Dadang said.<\/p>\n
Taufik also revealed that the provincial elections committee
\nhas found irregularities at almost all subdistricts and districts
\nin South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He showed reporters some of the reports of vote discrepancies,
\nsuch as those found in the subdistricts of Gandaria Utara, Rawa
\nBarat, Cipete Utara, Selong and Cilandak Barat.<\/p>\n
Taufik's remarks sparked anger from the local committee
\nmembers.<\/p>\n
The chairman of the Central Jakarta mayoralty elections
\ncommittee, M. Mukson, criticized the provincial committee as
\nbeing too reactive in making statements.<\/p>\n
"I think they're always too fast to make remarks or
\ndecisions," he said, saying that the provincial committee only
\nmade things more complicated.<\/p>\n
Mukson suggested that Taufik and his colleagues "shut their
\nmouths tightly" to allow the local committee members to complete
