Reconciliation idea dubious<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Post reported on Sept. 5 that the government and
\nthe National Commission on Human Rights will establish a National
\nReconciliation Team. Its aim is to preserve the country's unity.<\/p>\n
Some people fear, however, that the team will only be used for
\ncovering up painful truths existing in government and business
\ncircles in the name of reconciliation.<\/p>\n
A process of reconciliation involves two or more parties that
\nare having a serious conflict or confrontation; whereas, up till
\nnow, there is no conflict between the government and the
\ncommission, which itself was formed by the government.<\/p>\n
The prerequisites of reconciliation are that the two
\npertaining parties must fully realize their wrongdoings or
\nmistakes and eventually publicize them. This is followed by an
\nexpression of remorse with an apology. Finally, genuine regret
\nshould be judged by the preparedness of not only to accept full
\nresponsibility but also to undergo pertinent (legal) punishment
\nand by stating a commitment that the wrongdoings will never be
\nrepeated.<\/p>\n
The firm basis for the establishment of a reconciliation team
\nis mutual trust and respect. This can only be achieved through a
\nsolution of the underlying causes of the conflict where justice
\nprevails, unmarred by corruption, collusion and nepotism.<\/p>\n
Without trust and respect, reconciliation is as dubious as it
\nis between corruptors, plunderers, arsonists, abductors, rapists
\non the one hand and those victimized on the other.<\/p>\n
