RECOMMENDATIONS AND ACTION PLAN<\/p>\n
At the conclusion of the Asian Youth Congress on Drug Abuse
\nPrevention, held in Sanur, Bali, from Aug. 26 to Aug. 29,
\nhundreds of young participants pledged to adopt and uphold the
\nfollowing recommendations and action plan:<\/p>\n
1. We, as the young generation, pledge to be united against
\ndrugs, despite our differences in culture.<\/p>\n
2. We are committed to avoiding gateway drugs and stand firm in
\nour decision to say \"no\" to drugs.<\/p>\n
3. We vow not to treat drug addicts as criminals but as human
\nbeings and to always be supportive of people who want to be free
\nof drugs.<\/p>\n
4. We promise to be active and proactive and to create and
\nimplement effective activities for drug abuse prevention.<\/p>\n
It is our intention to make this pledge a reality not only on
\npaper, but also through our actions. The first step will be
\nsharing what we have experienced here with our peers back at
\nhome.<\/p>\n
The congress yielded several recommendations and action plans
\nas followed:<\/p>\n
School-based programs<\/p>\n
*Recommendations:<\/p>\n
- Principals and teachers need to be trained in drug
\nprevention education and they should be drug and tobacco free.<\/p>\n
- There should be drug prevention counseling centers at every
\nschool.<\/p>\n
- Information on the dangers of drug use should be made
\navailable at all schools not just those in the capital.
\n* Action plan:<\/p>\n
- To participate actively in the formulation of school-based
\nprograms.<\/p>\n
- To volunteer in regional areas to provide information and
\ncounseling for students who don't have access to drug prevention
\ninformation.<\/p>\n
What can young people do?<\/p>\n
* Recommendations:<\/p>\n
- There should be a balance of cooperation between the
\nschools, the communities, homes, etc.<\/p>\n
- People of influence who can provide moral support, financing
\nand facilities need to back up the youth. Nevertheless, young
\npeople should also be active in raising funds and resources.<\/p>\n
- The youth should be taken seriously and included as
\ncompetent stakeholders in the fight against drugs.<\/p>\n
* Action plans:<\/p>\n
- To help in reducing the use of drugs, including alcohol, in
\npeople who are addicted.<\/p>\n
- To use music, movies, computers and other means to increase
\nthe impact of prevention efforts and make prevention something
\nthe youth want to be a part of.<\/p>\n
Media Literacy<\/p>\n
* Recommendations:<\/p>\n
- Media makers should not display mixed messages that warn of
\nthe dangers of drugs, both legal and illegal, while at the same
\ntime glorifying but not showing the real effect they have on
\nusers.<\/p>\n
- Education that helps youth interpret the real meaning of
\nmedia messages need to be included in prevention efforts.<\/p>\n
* Action plan:<\/p>\n
- To view the media not simply as consumers but as discerning
\nindividuals who can understand the intention of both advertisers
\nand other media-makers and thus protect ourselves against pro-
\ndrug abuse tendencies.<\/p>",
