'Reclamation debate' held on Friday<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The public debate on the plan to reclaim 2,700
\nhectares of the city's northern coastal area as promised by
\nGovernor Sutiyoso will be held on Friday at Hotel Milenium on Jl.
\nKebon Sirih, Central Jakarta, an official said.<\/p>\n
Chairman of the city environment management board (BP-LHD)
\nKosasih Wirahadikusumah, however, said the debate would take the
\nform of a one-day seminar organized by the University of
\nIndonesia (UI).<\/p>\n
He said the three main parties participating comprised the
\nteam of the city's consultants which would present the
\nenvironmental impact analysis, the Office of the State Minister
\nfor the Environment, and the city planning agency.<\/p>\n
According to him, around 120 experts in various fields from a
\nnumber of universities, non-governmental organizations and the
\npress would take part in the seminar.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso recently cited the need to hold a public debate on
\nthe plan to reclaim Jakarta's northern coastal area to meet the
\nincreasing needs of the city for economic development.<\/p>\n
State Minister for the Environment Nabiel Makarim, Minister of
\nFisheries and Maritime Affairs Rokhmin Dahuri and a number of
\nnon-governmental organizations dealing with the environment have
\nrejected the plan because, they say, it will seriously damage the
\nenvironment in the area.--JP<\/p>",
