The integrated operation launched in Aceh to crush the
\nseparatist Free Aceh Movement (GAM) is now in its third month,
\nbut GAM's top leaders are still at large because of their
\nmobility in the guerrilla war that GAM is waging against the
\nIndonesian Military.<\/p>\n
In the meantime, as many as 145 village heads in Aceh have
\nbecome victims of this armed conflict. Of this number, 118 have
\nbeen killed.<\/p>\n
This situation has prompted the Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam
\nprovincial administration to announce that it will give a prize
\nof Rp 150 million for the capture of top GAM leaders such as
\nSofyan Dawood or Ishak Daud, either dead or alive.<\/p>\n
This prize will encourage Acehnese to be more active in
\nhelping the Indonesian government crush GAM. It would be for the
\nbenefit of the Acehnese themselves to assist the Indonesian
\ngovernment in this respect. But they should not be moved to help
\nthe government crush GAM only because of the reward money. They
\nmust understand that Aceh will never be peaceful as long as GAM
\nexists.<\/p>\n
