Rebels take road in new fighting<\/p>\n
COTABATO CITY, Philippines (AP): Army troops clashed with
\nMuslim rebels who occupied a major road in a southern province on
\nMonday in fresh fighting that could threaten peace talks, rebel
\nleaders and officials said.<\/p>\n
As in the past, military officials and leaders of the
\nseparatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front blamed each other for
\nthe clashes, which began on Saturday in the town of Shariff Aguak
\nin Maguindanao province.<\/p>\n
Brig. Gen. Jose Torrelavega said the fighting started when
\narmy troops sent to check reports of a rebel occupation of an
\narea near the town hall of Maguindanao's Ampatuan town were fired
\nupon by MILF guerrillas.<\/p>\n
He said sporadic fighting spread to Shariff Aguak, where the
\nrebels occupied and blockaded a major road on Monday with
\nvehicles seized from motorists. At least six rebels were killed,
\nTorrelavega said. He said six soldiers were wounded in the
\nclashes.<\/p>",
