The Green Line of Jakarta's KRL commuter rail system appears overcrowded during peak hours, even though it carries only half the passengers of the Red Line (Bogor route), which served 11.9 million passengers in March 2026 compared to 6.29 million for the Rangkasbitung Line. This crowding stems from the use of 10-car trains on the Green Line versus 12-car trains on the Red Line, leading to higher density per carriage. KAI Commuter is trialling 12-car operations to boost capacity by 20% and is collaborating with the Directorate General of Railways under the Ministry of Transportation to enhance infrastructure if needed.

The carriages of the Jabodetabek Electric Rail Train (KRL) on the
Rangkasbitung-Tanah Abang route are often seen crowded with passengers,
particularly during morning and evening rush hours. Nevertheless, the
Rangkasbitung-Tanah Abang KRL route, and vice versa, is not the busiest
in terms of passenger numbers. According to the latest March 2026 data
from KAI Commuter, the passenger count on this route is only half that
of the Jakarta Kota-Bogor route and vice versa. From 1 to 29 March 2026,
the Bogor line (Red Line) still holds the top position with the highest
number of passengers at 11.9 million. Next is the Cikarang Line with
6.69 million passengers over the same period, followed by the
Rangkasbitung Line with 6.29 million passengers. This situation is
caused by several factors, from the number of train carriages to the
train interval (headway). Currently, the Green Line KRL is served by
10-car train sets, while the Bogor route KRL actively uses 12-car train
sets. The fewer number of carriages makes the Green Line KRL appear more
crowded during rush hours. “We are currently in the trial phase to
ensure that supporting infrastructure can accommodate the operation of
Commuterline with 12-car configurations on the Green Line,” said VP
Corporate Secretary of KAI Commuter, Karina Amanda, as reported by
Kompas.com on Monday (2/3/2026). Karina confirmed that the 12-car KRL
trial is to accommodate the high passenger growth on the Green Line
route. A 12-car KRL is projected to carry 20 percent more passengers
compared to a 10-car set. “If based on the evaluation it is still not
feasible, then of course KAI, together with the Directorate General of
Railways (DJKA) of the Ministry of Transportation, will continue to
strengthen the infrastructure,” she said.
",
