The Tourism, Creative Economy, Youth and Sports Agency\n(Disparekrafpora) of Gunungkidul has visited a fried grasshopper seller\nwho went viral for stuffing jars with cardboard to make them appear\nfull. The seller claimed the price of grasshoppers, known locally as\nwalang, is currently high.<\/p>\n
Head of Disparekrafpora Gunungkidul, Hary Sukmono, said the agency\nvisited the seller near the JJLS Tourist Levy Collection Point (TPR) to\nseek clarification. \u201cThe seller admitted to packaging the fried\ngrasshoppers in jars that were stuffed with cardboard inside,\u201d he said\nwhen contacted by detikJogja on Wednesday afternoon (19\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
The seller told Disparekrafpora that the cardboard was used for\nefficiency because the price of fried grasshoppers is currently rising.\n\u201cAccording to the statement, the seller stuffed the packaging with\ncardboard because the price of fried grasshoppers is currently high, at\nRp 500,000 per kilogram,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Disparekrafpora then asked the seller to package the fried\ngrasshoppers in containers whose size matches the contents. \u201cAnd to make\na sticker to be affixed to the packaging that includes net weight\ninformation so it is more informative for buyers,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Hary also said that Disparekrafpora advised the seller to include a\ncontact number on the label of the fried grasshoppers being sold. \u201cThe\nseller accepted the input and suggestions we provided. Going forward,\nthey will also include the seller\u2019s mobile number so that if there are\ncomplaints, buyers can contact the seller directly,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Head of Destination Development at Disparekrafpora Gunungkidul,\nNanang Putranto, added that the seller also admitted to not having\nsmaller jars, which forced the seller to resort to such a practice. \u201cWe\nalso asked that the container be adjusted to the price offered, so it\nshould not be stuffed and so on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nanang also asked the seller, if unable to afford jars, to sell the\nfried grasshoppers by weight. \u201cOr just have it weighed, so many grams,\nso buyers know exactly what they are getting,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
