Realization of 20 megaprojects<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for the Economy Dorodjatun Kuntjoro
\nJakti has reportedly disclosed that 20 national megaprojects
\nworth US$300 billion will be implemented between now and 2005.
\nThis positive news has emerged amid an increasing number of
\ncorruption cases.<\/p>\n
At least three megaprojects will be undertaken with the
\nsupport of Japanese assistance in 2002. The three big projects
\ninvolving US$1.3 billion in investments consist of a
\npetrochemical plant in Tuban, the Paiton III and IV power plant
\nextensions in Probolinggo and the Tanjung Jati power plant, all
\nin East Java.<\/p>\n
Japan has promised to disburse the financial assistance for
\nthe three projects between June and September of this year, said
\nDorodjatun during discussions with businessmen grouped in the
\nEast Java Regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadinda) in
\nSurabaya recently.<\/p>\n
He said Japan had shown great interest in financing the
\nmegaprojects thanks to its satisfaction on seeing the completion
\nof the Paiton project without involving brokers.<\/p>\n
The problem now is how to maintain the momentum and the
\ncritical attitude of Indonesian lobbyists so as to speed up
\nrecovery from the economic crisis. The resumption of
\nconstruction work in these megaprojects should make a big
\ncontribution to the country's foreign exchange earnings, besides
\ncreating jobs for local workers.<\/p>\n
In various cases, government representatives or national
\nbusinessmen in foreign investment companies have tended to be
\npassive or easily satisfied with the percentage of their shares.
\nThere is an impression that they lack a critical attitude, for
\ninstance, towards the possibility that foreign investors will buy
\nimported products from their country or companies at high prices,
\nhigher than the prevailing prices.<\/p>\n
Thus, the ability to attract foreign investors should be
\nfollowed up by a critical attitude towards every development in
\ncompanies so as to avoid a further prolongation of the crisis.<\/p>\n
