        "content": "<p>Eighty-one years after Indonesia\u2019s independence, democracy in this\ncountry has travelled a long road.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia has experienced Guided Democracy, a centralist New Order\ngovernment, and Reformasi, which opened up far wider space for political\nfreedom.<\/p>\n<p>That long journey still leaves unfinished business and the deepest\nquestion of whether Indonesian democracy has found the form most suited\nto the character of its own nation.<\/p>\n<p>The question matters because democracy should not stop at the\nprocedure of electing leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Democracy also concerns how power is exercised, how the people are\nheard, how weak groups gain space, and how political decisions deliver\njustice.<\/p>\n<p>Reformasi did produce openness, but at the same time it brought\npolitical practice ever closer to liberalisation. High political costs,\ntransactional politics, the influence of financiers, corruption, and the\nweakening of deliberation are seen as symptoms that need to be\nevaluated.<\/p>\n<p>Direct democracy has also brought important progress that must not be\nignored. Society has gained a greater right to determine its leaders,\nfreedom of expression has grown, changes of power take place more\nopenly, and public officials face stronger public scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the issue is not a choice between democracy and Pancasila.\nThe real challenge is to make democracy work in an increasingly\nPancasila-oriented way.<\/p>",
