In this context, PT QMB New Energy Materials, a nickel processing\ncompany based on High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) technology in the\nIndonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP), demonstrates how Corporate\nSocial Responsibility (CSR) strategies can become an integral part of a\nsustainable business model.<\/p>\n
This was highlighted during the TOP CSR Awards 2026 judging interview\norganised by TopBusiness Magazine on Monday (27\/4\/2026), featuring\nAssistant General Manager of PT QMB New Energy Materials, Cao Changyu,\nand Senior ESG Staff, Daniela Wong.<\/p>\n
As a company operating at the heart of Indonesia\u2019s nickel industry,\nQMB recognises that its industrial activities have significant impacts\non the surrounding environment and communities. Therefore, the CSR\napproach implemented is not symbolic but strategic and integrated.<\/p>\n
In his presentation, Assistant General Manager of PT QMB New Energy\nMaterials, Cao Changyu, emphasised that the company places\nsustainability as the primary foundation of its operations.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe always strive to incorporate humanitarian values into every part\nof the company, with the aim of creating economic value, giving back to\nthe community, and protecting the environment. Through our CSR\nprogrammes, we want to create shared value that not only impacts the\ncompany but also the community and environmental sustainability as a\nwhole,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
He added that the CSR judging momentum serves as an important\nreflection for the company to continuously improve the quality of the\nprogrammes it runs.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe that business success is not only measured by economic\naspects but also by real contributions to society and environmental\npreservation. Therefore, we continue to integrate sustainability\nprinciples into every aspect of the company\u2019s operations,\u201d he\ncontinued.<\/p>\n
Data-Based and Participatory, QMB\u2019s CSR Developed Systematically<\/p>\n
In line with the global industry\u2019s transformation towards sustainable\npractices, QMB develops CSR programmes based on data and comprehensive\nsocial analysis.<\/p>\n
Daniela Wong explained that the company conducts social mapping to\nidentify the real needs of communities around the operational area.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe realise that company activities bring both impacts and\nchallenges, especially related to rapid urbanisation and population\ngrowth. Therefore, our CSR programmes are designed not only as\nobligations but as strategies to manage impacts responsibly,\u201d she\nclarified.<\/p>\n
This approach is strengthened through the regular preparation of\nsustainability reports and the implementation of dual materiality\nassessments involving various stakeholders, from communities,\ngovernment, to business partners.<\/p>\n
In 2025, QMB allocated a CSR budget of Rp41 billion with more than\n5,000 beneficiaries. The programmes are run systematically, from\nplanning to evaluation, involving communities as active subjects.<\/p>\n
\u201cCommunities are not only beneficiaries but also involved as\nimplementers through discussions, education, and capacity building. With\nthis approach, we aim to encourage gradual community self-reliance,\u201d\nDaniela added.<\/p>\n
Educational Infrastructure Becomes Flagship Programme<\/p>\n
One of QMB\u2019s flagship CSR programmes that has come under the\nspotlight is the construction of educational infrastructure at SDN 4\nBawadopi, Morowali.<\/p>\n
This programme arose from findings of a gap between the growing\nnumber of students and the capacity of educational facilities in the\narea.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe saw an urgent need to increase school capacity. The number of\nstudents keeps increasing every year, while available facilities are\nstill very limited. Therefore, we decided to intervene by building\nclassrooms, access roads, and other supporting facilities,\u201d Daniela\nrevealed.<\/p>\n
In addition to capacity factors, safety aspects were also a primary\nconcern. Access to the school was previously deemed risky, especially\nduring the rainy season, and there had even been accidents involving\nstudents.<\/p>\n
Through this programme, QMB not only built classrooms but also\nimproved access roads, drainage systems, and other supporting\nfacilities.<\/p>\n
Real Impact: School Capacity Increases, Local Economy Grows<\/p>\n
The implementation of this CSR programme shows significant impacts,\nboth in terms of education and the local economy.<\/p>\n
The number of students at SDN 4 Bawadopi increased from 300 to 506\nstudents in one year. The learning system became more optimal with\nadequate facilities and teaching staff support.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the construction, teaching and learning activities became much\nmore effective. The improved road access also enhances student safety\nand comfort. In fact, the school has now become the centre of\neducational activities at the sub-district level,\u201d Daniela\nexplained.<\/p>\n
Not only that, economic impacts are also starting to be felt.\nInfrastructure improvements have spurred new economic activities around\nthe school, with an increase in the number of local business actors.<\/p>\n
From an environmental perspective, the construction also contributes\nto reducing flood and congestion potentials in the area.<\/p>\n
The community satisfaction index for this programme is also recorded\nhigh, at 86.13, making the school the top choice for the community.<\/p>\n
QMB also complements the physical development programme with various\nhuman resource development initiatives.<\/p>\n
Environmental education programmes, tree planting, and introduction\nto Mandarin language are part of efforts to improve education quality\ncomprehensively.<\/p>\n
