There was a time when a country was not in crisis, but also not truly\nmoving forward. The numbers looked neat, stability was maintained, but\nin the grassroots spaces\u2014in markets, small shops, household\nconversations\u2014there was a pause that remained unanswered. Indonesia\ntoday is in that space.<\/p>\n
The government, through various official statements, shows an\neconomic foundation that cannot be ignored: strong foreign reserves\naround USD 151.9 billion, a debt ratio that is still controlled, and a\nfiscal deficit that remains managed\u2014around 2.3% and in policy dynamics\npotentially widening to approach 2.9% of GDP, yet still disciplined\nbelow the safe limit of 3%. Credit is growing, investment continues to\nflow in, and macroeconomic stability is relatively maintained.<\/p>\n
And in the cabinet working meeting at the State Palace on 8 April\n2026, President Prabowo Subianto emphasised the necessary direction:\nbudget discipline, focus on real impact, acceleration of execution, and\nfavouring the people\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n
That direction is right. In fact, very right. But like all correct\ndirections, it still needs one thing that is harder: accuracy in\nimplementation.<\/p>\n
This is where reality starts to speak in a different language.\nHousehold consumption\u2014which supports more than half of our economy\u2014is\nstill moving, but not as strongly as before. The middle class is\nstarting to hold back. MSMEs remain alive, but many have not yet\ndeveloped.<\/p>\n
A shop owner may not read fiscal reports, but he knows one simple\nthing: customers come, but they no longer buy like they used to.<\/p>\n
Our economy grows in numbers, but has not yet fully grown in feeling.\nAnd it is precisely here that policies are tested.<\/p>\n
The President\u2019s briefing is essentially a call to shift from\nstability to execution. From preventing falls to the courage to\nleap.<\/p>\n
However, our biggest challenge is no longer in policy formulation,\nbut in the character of its implementation. We do not lack programmes.\nWe often lack the courage to be honest in carrying them out.<\/p>\n
It is time we say this clearly: no more presidential aides and their\nranks who are mediocre in character and behave in a \u2018just to please the\nboss\u2019 manner.<\/p>\n
This country does not need beautiful reports on paper that are\nfragile in the field. It does not need meetings full of success numbers\nbut poor in honesty about difficulties.<\/p>\n
In every coordination meeting, what is needed is not just\nachievements\u2014but acknowledgment of obstacles. Get used to conveying\ndifficulties that require breakthroughs and policy execution\ncoordination\u2014not just reassuring success numbers. Because only from that\nhonesty can policies be improved.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, we also face public noise that is no less\ndisruptive to the direction. Criticism is still needed. It is part of\ndemocracy. But criticism that loses its data foundation is misleading.\nWe see claims that the economy is collapsing, that the country has lost\ncontrol, that nothing is running right anymore\u2014narratives that sound\nstrong but are fragile when tested.<\/p>\n
Hoaxes muddy it. Emotions accelerate it. And in that fog, trust\u2014which\nshould be the foundation\u2014is slowly eroded.<\/p>\n
Yet without trust, there is no truly solid stability. No truly\nconfident investment. No truly believed policy.<\/p>\n
If we pull it further, Indonesia\u2019s position today actually has a\nstrong economic foundation. We are more stable than many developing\ncountries, larger than some neighbours, and have a demographic potential\nrarely possessed by other nations.<\/p>\n
But stability is not the end goal. It only gives us time.<\/p>\n
The question is: do we use that time to transform, or just to\nsurvive? So reading the President\u2019s briefing is not enough by just\nagreeing with it. We need to complement it.<\/p>\n
The direction is already right. The foundation is already strong. But\nthe next step demands:<\/p>\n
\u2022 honesty in implementation<\/p>\n
\u2022 courage in corrections<\/p>\n
\u2022 and firmness in choosing quality, not just loyalty<\/p>\n
In the end, this country\u2019s future is not only determined by who\nleads, but by how those who carry out the leadership work\u2014in silence, in\nmeetings, in small decisions that determine the big direction.<\/p>\n
And perhaps this entire discussion can be summarised in a simple but\ndecisive reminder: If stability is not followed by honesty in execution,\nthen it will only become a calm that delays problems.
