        "content": "<p>Reacting against allegations<\/p>\n<p>Information provided by George Yunus Aditjondro, revealing<br>\ndata about corruption among officials, has left us dumbfounded.<br>\nAditjondro acquired much data (on the subject) after being forced<br>\nto leave Indonesia. In other countries, it seems, access to such<br>\ndata is much more easy.<\/p>\n<p>Now, we are once again dumbfounded by similar disclosures,<br>\nmade by someone who came to visit this country from abroad.<br>\nJeffrey Winters has hurt the feelings of the Coordinating<br>\nMinister for Economic Affairs, Finance and Industry Ginandjar<br>\nKartasasmita, and the Indonesian government.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a seminar in Jakarta a while ago, Winters revealed<br>\nhis suspicions of Ginandjar, particularly in connection with PT<br>\nFreeport. Winters actually did not reveal anything new. All he<br>\ndisclosed was allusions made by Econit, published several years<br>\nago.<\/p>\n<p>It is true that we must uphold the principle of the<br>\npresumption of innocence. However, any reactions that we give<br>\nagainst, or comments that we make on suspected acts of<br>\ncorruption, collusion and nepotism must not be allowed to stop<br>\nthe process of our searching for the truth. The principles of<br>\ndemocracy and transparency dictate a respect for probing<br>\nquestions. Our reactions must not be allowed to end such<br>\nquestioning.<\/p>\n<p>The social psychology of our community at present is such that<br>\nanything that is officially denied is regarded as true. Rumors<br>\nare believed more than official government explanations. In such<br>\na psychological climate, excessively severe reactions tend to be<br>\nharmful because they would only serve to support the allegation.<\/p>\n<p>What is very much needed at this moment is not rhetoric<br>\nproficiency in denying allegations of corruption, collusion and<br>\nnepotism, but the ability to proof that we are clean.<\/p>\n<p>-- Media Indonesia, Jakarta<\/p>",
