'RCTI' postpones staff dismissals<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Privately owned television station RCTI decided
\nto postpone planned dismissals following a meeting with employees
\non Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The station's public relations manager, Eduard Depari, said
\nthe dismissals were postponed until an agreement could be reached
\nbetween management and employees.<\/p>\n
\"We agreed to postpone the layoffs after we talked with the
\nemployees' representatives, who urged the planned dismissals be
\ncanceled,\" Eduard told Antara on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
He said that in the meeting, which was attended by Alex
\nKomara, the station's director of operations, the employees were
\nurged to understand the station's financial difficulties.<\/p>\n
According to Eduard, dismissals were the station's final
\noption after struggling to survive the past two years amid the
\neconomic crisis.<\/p>\n
\"We have put in place efficiency measures, including halting
\nthe purchase of foreign films, temporarily capping salaries,
\ncutting the directors' salaries and giving no salaries to the
\ncompany's commissioners,\" he said.<\/p>\n
However, Eduard said the station might dismiss 20 percent of
\nits 620 regular employees, not the 30 percent which had been
\nannounced earlier.<\/p>\n
Separately, five dismissed RCTI employees went to the Jakarta
\nLegal Aid Institute on Thursday for assistance.<\/p>\n
Christina Rini, a lawyer at the institute, said an employee
\nfrom the station's inventory department was dismissed without
\nseverance pay.<\/p>\n
\"We would like to invite management to discuss the matter,\"
\nRini told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, three people claiming to represent 80 RCTI
\nemployees also visited the institute seeking legal advice. (jun)<\/p>",
