Ratings on fund managers urged<\/p>\n
NUSA DUA, Bali (JP): Fund managers must be rated regularly to
\nencourage domestic investors, particularly institutions, to
\ninvest more in the capital market, an analyst said here
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
\"Ratings are a good way to make our local investors more
\nfamiliar with the services of fund managers,\" said Yannes
\nNaibaho, the president of PT UsahaBersama Sekuritas, one of the
\ncountry's 60 fund managers.<\/p>\n
He said many local investors -- particularly pension funds and
\ninsurance firms -- still did not understand the benefits of using
\nfund managers. And they needed independent assessments on the
\nreliability and capability of fund managers.<\/p>\n
Speaking to The Jakarta Post on the sidelines of a seminar on
\nlocal investors' role in the capital market, he said performance
\nratings would encourage fund managers to improve their
\nprofessionalism and, in turn, encourage institutional investors
\nto use their services.<\/p>\n
Ratings can be based on the amount of income fund managers
\ngenerate on their managed funds, and on the volume of funds they
\nmanage in a year, Naibaho said.<\/p>\n
He said ratings should be made by an independent agency.<\/p>\n
\"To maintain objectivity on ratings, we must make sure that
\nthey are made by an independent agency and not by a government
\ninstitution,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The other participants at the seminar, organized by the
\nAssociation of Indonesian Listed Companies, shared Naibaho's view
\nthat ratings would help institutional investors to choose fund
\nmanagers.<\/p>\n
Glenn M.S. Yusuf, the president of PT Danareksa Securities,
\nsaid most pension funds and insurance companies still relied on
\ntheir own staff to handle their capital market investments.<\/p>\n
B. Munir Sjamsoeddin, the president of PT Reasuransi Umum
\nIndonesia, admitted that many institutional investors were
\nunaware of the benefits of fund managers. (bnt)<\/p>",
