Ratification of UN pact on environment sought<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government has submitted proposals to the
\nHouse of Representatives (DPR) to ratify two United Nations
\nconventions on environmental preservation which were signed at
\nthe first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro two years ago.<\/p>\n
State Minister of Environment Sarwono Kusumaatmadja held a
\nhearing with the DPR on Monday to discuss the proposals to ratify
\nthe Convention on Biological Diversity and the Framework
\nConvention on Climate Change.<\/p>\n
Sarwono said the two conventions are vital to Indonesia's
\nefforts to preserve its mass wealth of natural resources.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's biodiversity has been eroded through a combination
\nof excessive use of natural resources, population pressure, the
\nglobalization process and ignorance, he said.<\/p>\n
Climatic changes caused directly or indirectly by human
\nactivities could lead to destruction of the ecosystem, he said.
\n\"Changes in global climate affect life on earth, especially the
\nenvironment.\"<\/p>\n
The conventions stress the importance of preserving the
\nenvironment for the continuation of human life on earth.
\nSoeharto, who attended the Rio summit, signed the conventions on
\nbehalf of the Indonesian government.<\/p>\n
Sarwono strongly urged the House to ratify the documents.<\/p>\n
