        "content": "<p>JAKARTA - The Minister of Protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers\n(P2MI), Mukhtarudin, stated that the Presidential Regulation (Perpres)\non the Ratification of International Labour Organization (ILO)\nConvention No.\u00a0188, signed by President Prabowo Subianto, will protect\nIndonesian seafarers (ABK) working on foreign vessels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndonesia\u2019s diplomatic position on the international stage becomes\nmuch more solid in pressing foreign ship-owning countries to comply with\ninternational work standards,\u201d Mukhtarudin said in a press release\nreceived by Kompas.com on Friday (1\/5\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>First, enhanced legal protection closes gaps in national regulations,\nso ABK on foreign vessels now have a binding international legal basis\nto demand their rights.<\/p>\n<p>Second, humane working standards are created through written\nemployment contracts, adequate rest hours, and access to proper social\nsecurity and health guarantees.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, it promotes recruitment transparency by tightening oversight\nof placement agencies to eradicate fraud and human trafficking in the\nmaritime sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ratification of ILO 188 is a historic milestone in legal\ndocuments, a strong international umbrella of protection for our family\nfighters at sea. This is the answer to the longing of ABK for justice\nand equal protection,\u201d Mukhtarudin stated.<\/p>\n<p>He emphasised that the Ministry of P2MI will soon coordinate with\nrelevant ministries and agencies to ensure that Perpres No.\u00a025 of 2026\nis implemented effectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe hear the voices of labour and environmental activists. This\nratification is a big initial step,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur next task is to ensure that every provision of this\ninternational agreement is realised in the form of real protection on\nthe ship\u2019s deck, not just on paper,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Previously reported, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto gave a\ngift to workers on this May Day occasion in the form of the ratification\nof an international convention on seafarers.<\/p>\n<p>Prabowo stated that he had signed the Perpres on the Ratification of\nInternational Labour Organization (ILO) Convention No.\u00a0188.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is one more gift for workers. I have just signed Presidential\nRegulation No.\u00a025 of 2026 on the Ratification of International Labour\nOrganization Convention No.\u00a0188 to ensure protection and welfare for\nfishery vessel crew,\u201d Prabowo said at the 2026 May Day celebration at\nMonas this morning.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the ILO convention on seafarers, Prabowo explained\nthat the government will also inaugurate 1,386 fishing villages this\nyear, 2026.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, for the first time in Indonesia\u2019s history,\nfisherfolk are being managed by the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNext year we will open 1,500 fishing villages.
