        "content": "<p>Ratelindo eyes nationwide operation<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The telecommunication company PT Ratelindo, a<br>\nsubsidiary of PT Bakrie Brothers, expects to expand its fixed<br>\nwireless telephone service nationwide by 1999, the company&apos;s<br>\ndirector for business and service development, Remedi<br>\nPerangingangin, said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Peranginangin said he was optimistic his company would get the<br>\nlicense to install fixed cellular lines in areas outside of Java<br>\nin 1999.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We are in the process of obtaining permits from the<br>\ngovernment to extend our operations nationwide,&quot; Peranginangin<br>\nsaid on the sidelines of a telecommunication seminar.<\/p>\n<p>He said Ratelindo expected to sell and install between 100,000<br>\nand 140,000 lines in Jakarta and West Java next year to obtain<br>\nthe permit to operate nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Ratelindo had sold 110,000 fixed wireless telephone lines as<br>\nof this year, 80,000 of them were installed at an investment of<br>\nUS$1,000 per line, he said.<\/p>\n<p>Ratelindo obtained permits to install 250,000 lines in the<br>\ngreater Jakarta area and 50,000 lines in West Java.<\/p>\n<p>The Director General of Post and Telecommunication Djakaria<br>\nPurawidjaja said yesterday the ministry would not give the permit<br>\nfor the company to operate nationwide until it had installed the<br>\ntargeted 300,000 lines.<\/p>\n<p>Peranginangin said if Ratelindo was licensed to expand its<br>\noperation, it would begin the expansion on Java island, and then<br>\nSumatra, Sulawesi, and Kalimantan.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier the company announced its plan to increase its line<br>\ncapacity to 500,000 fixed telephone lines by 1999.<\/p>\n<p>Peranginangin said the number of complaints of Ratelindo&apos;s<br>\nfixed wireless service was only 2 percent of the total number of<br>\nusers.<\/p>\n<p>Ratelindo, together with digital satellite network provider<br>\nHughes Network Systems Inc., held the one-day seminar yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The seminar, attended by world telecommunication operators<br>\nfrom several countries, including Czechoslovakia, Russia, and<br>\nVietnam, discussed the technology progress of the GMH-2000<br>\nExtended Time Division Multiple Access (E-TDMA) wireless digital<br>\ncellular system provided by Hughes.
