Rare animals seized in raid<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Natural Resources Conservation Agency
\nconducted a sweeping operation of rare animals displayed on Jl.
\nBarito in South Jakarta on Sunday, but only managed to seize
\nseven animals from dozens due to a minimal police presence.<\/p>\n
"We had difficulty with this operation since we were only
\nassisted by a few police officers," the agency's conservation
\nchief for western region Yunus Makasuah said.<\/p>\n
He stated that the operation was conducted carefully to avoid
\nresistance from the traders.<\/p>\n
Yunus said his men were attacked by traders and had suffered
\ninjuries when seizing rare animals during a previous operation in
\nFebruary.<\/p>\n
"We didn't want our personnel to be attacked by the traders
\nagain," he claimed.<\/p>\n
During Sunday's operation, the agency's special officials who
\nwere helped by several police officers from the Kebayoran Lama
\npolice subprecinct, seized seven animals, including a rare turtle
\nand a white starling (see photo).<\/p>\n
Besides the two rare animals, the officers also seized a
\nlizard and a python.<\/p>\n
Before conducting the operation, the agency officials
\nidentified dozens of animals that were offered by traders along
\nJl. Barito, including 50 turtles of four different species.<\/p>\n
The traders also sold two owls, four black-headed parrots,
\nseveral rare cockatoos, four wild ducks, two baby orangutans and
