The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) is prompting\nnations and societies to consider human readiness in facing\ntechnological shifts. While opening opportunities across various\nsectors, AI advancement also raises issues regarding access gaps,\ntechnological capacity, talent, and the ability of states to regulate\nits utilisation.<\/p>\n
These issues were among the key discussions at the World Encounter\nSummit 2026, which brought together government leaders, youth,\nacademics, religious figures, technology companies, and civil society\nfrom various countries in Bali. The forum series commenced with the Bali\nHarmony Dialogue at the United In Diversity (UID) Bali Campus, Kura Kura\nBali Special Economic Zone, on Thursday (3\/9\/2026), followed by the XI\nInternational Scholas Chairs Congress 2026 from 4\u20136 September 2026.<\/p>\n
Participants from five continents discussed the impact of AI on\nvarious aspects of life, ranging from education and the workforce to the\nmental health of the younger generation, democracy, and social\nrelations. A primary concern raised in the forum was the disparity in AI\ndevelopment between nations. Not all countries possess equal access to\ndata, computing power, digital infrastructure, talent, or the capacity\nto develop and regulate such technology.<\/p>\n
The Chairman of the National Economic Council of Indonesia, Luhut B.\nPandjaitan, stated that Indonesia needs to build its technological\ncapacity independently so as not to remain merely a user of AI. \u201cOne way\nis through the development of AI supported by clean energy and STEM\neducation,\u201d Luhut noted in a press release received on Saturday\n(5\/9\/2026).<\/p>\n
The Minister of Communication and Digital, Meutya Hafid, added that\nthe high usage of AI by Indonesia\u2019s younger generation must be\naccompanied by the strengthening of research, talent, infrastructure,\nand policy. \u201cUsage alone does not automatically translate into national\ncapacity,\u201d said Meutya.<\/p>\n
According to Meutya, this situation presents an opportunity for\nIndonesia to develop its own technology, ensuring the country does not\nmerely serve as a market for AI products from other nations.<\/p>\n
From a social perspective, the Executive Director of Scholas\nOccurrentes, Maria Paz Jurado, stated that discussions regarding AI need\nto look beyond the technological capabilities achievable by machines.\nShe argued that the global community must also determine what kind of\nhumanity they wish to build alongside technological progress. The\nequitable distribution of AI benefits, she continued, relates not only\nto technology but also to social, economic, moral, and environmental\njustice.<\/p>\n
Consequently, the development of AI places not only technological\ncapacity at the forefront of the issue but also human resource readiness\nand governance.
