Jakarta's Deputy Governor Rano Karno has reaffirmed the provincial government's commitment to transforming the capital into a cinema city, despite scepticism from some in the film industry, by establishing a Jakarta Film Commission and utilising a Rp84 billion tax incentive fund for film production starting in 2025. Drawing from his 55-year career in film, Rano highlighted the economic potential of the sector, noting that 85% of Indonesia's 122 million cinema-goers in 2024 watched local films, and Bank Indonesia supports this as a new growth area within the creative economy. The initiative includes the proposed Jakarta Youth Film Festival in 2026, themed 'Jakarta Our City', to foster young talent and cross-sector synergy, with ambitions to attract international participation within two years.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Governor of DKI Jakarta, Rano Karno, has
emphasised that the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government is serious about
turning the capital into a cinema city, despite doubts from some
quarters.

“Jakarta is serious. Even if some friends in the film industry doubt
me. We want to establish the Jakarta Film Commission, and I really want
to make Jakarta a cinema city,” he said in Jakarta on Thursday.

Rano expressed optimism that DKI Jakarta can realise this ambition,
supported by various factors including fiscal resources. He stated that
the provincial government currently holds a Rp84 billion entertainment
tax incentive, which is planned to be used as capital for film
production.

“In the past, there was a policy in Jakarta to return entertainment
taxes to producers to encourage more film productions. From 2025 until
now, we still hold around Rp84 billion. That’s why I gathered producers
the other day. We want to return it to the producers for production,” he
said.

On that occasion, Rano recounted the lack of banks willing to finance
films because they are considered high-risk.

Rano experienced this during his nearly 55 years in the film world.
Over that period, he has participated in around 150 films, produced
about five films, and created soap operas including “Si Doel Anak
Sekolahan”.

Based on 2024 data, the number of cinema-goers in Indonesia reached
122 million people. About 85% of them watched Indonesian films. This
figure shows that national films have become the host in their own
country and have significant economic potential.

In a positive response, BI DKI also agrees that the film industry, as
part of the creative economy subsector, has the potential to become a
new source of the economy, especially in Jakarta.

A concept for the “Jakarta Youth Film Festival” has been proposed,
which is a manifestation of cross-sector synergy in strengthening the
film ecosystem, particularly by involving the younger generation as the
main actors.

The Jakarta Youth Film Festival 2026 carries the theme “Jakarta Our
City”, serving as a creative space for the younger generation to develop
within the film ecosystem, as well as a platform for actualising
Jakarta’s young talents in line with the development of the creative
economy as one of the new sources of economic growth in DKI Jakarta.

Rano believes that within two years, the event can be attended by
people from abroad.
",
