Ramos warns against cronyism<\/p>\n
MANILA (DPA): Former Philippine President Fidel Ramos urged
\nFilipinos on Thursday to guard against a revival of cronyism
\nunder the administration of President Joseph Estrada, a former
\nsupporter of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.<\/p>\n
In a statement on the first day of Estrada's second year in
\noffice, Ramos warned against complacency amid encouraging signs
\nthat the Philippine economy is recovering from Asia's financial
\ncrisis ahead of other hard-hit Southeast Asian countries.<\/p>\n
Estrada marked the end of the first year of his six-year term
\non Wednesday, trumpeting the country's economic recovery as his
\nadministration's major achievement. He vowed to work harder in
\nhis second year, saying there was still a lot to be done to
\nfulfill his promise to improve the lives of the country's
\nestimated 20 million poor people.<\/p>\n
A major concern of critics and analysts has been the
\nwidespread perception that cronyism is back with some of Marcos'
\nfriends and associates, who are also closely linked to Estrada,
\ngaining influential posts in business and politics.<\/p>",
