Ramos' sister to sue his `lover'<\/p>\n
MANILA (Reuter): The sister of Philippine President Fidel
\nRamos threatened yesterday to sue his alleged former lover for
\nstatements linking her to drug traffickers.<\/p>\n
The office of Senator Leticia Ramos Shahani, Ramos's sister,
\nissued a statement accusing socialite Rose Marie "Baby" Arenas of
\nsmearing the senator's reputation.<\/p>\n
Two Manila tabloids quoted Arenas last weekend as saying
\nShahani was involved in the deportation of 11 Indians despite
\npending drug charges against them.<\/p>\n
The deportation, which enabled the Indians to escape court
\nprosecution and provoked a national scandal, led to the firing of
\nthe country's immigration chief.<\/p>\n
The Indians, who were deported in July, were charged with
\nmanufacturing almost seven tons of methaqualone, or mandrax, a
\ndrug that puts users into a stupor.<\/p>\n
"To claim that the senator is the 'brains' in protecting drug
\ntraffickers and manufacturers is a very serious charge which has
\nno basis in fact," Shahani's office said.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for Shahani said the senator was also considering
\nsuing the two tabloids.<\/p>",
