Ramos apologizes to Mitterrand's wife<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): President Fidel Ramos has apologized to the wife
\nof French President Francois Mitterrand for banning her from a
\ncontroversial conference on East Timor in the Philippines last
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
In a letter to Danielle Miterrand, copies of which were
\nreleased yesterday, Ramos -- who is to visit France in September
\n-- said "my government sincerely regrets that your person has
\nbeen so affected by this situation."<\/p>\n
"Yet I am grateful that your response has been very correct,"
\nhe said, referring to her decision to cancel her attendance at
\nthe Manila meeting, centered on alleged Indonesian military
\nabuses in the former Portuguese colony.<\/p>\n
Ramos, under pressure from Indonesia over the conference,
\nbarred foreign delegates from entering the country. Danielle
\nMitterrand's name was left on a blacklist despite her earlier
\ndeclaration she would not attend.<\/p>",
