Ramayana resumes business in Cengkareng<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Retail chain company PT Ramayana Lestari Sentosa
\nTbk. reopened over the weekend one of its department stores which
\nwas burned and looted during the May 1998 unrest.<\/p>\n
The 8,828-square-meter store, located in the newly rebuilt
\nCengkareng Plaza in Cengkareng, West Jakarta, is the third
\nRamayana store to resume operation in the past two months.<\/p>\n
Business in the area seems to have returned to normal, with
\nvarious fast food outlets, a recreation center and a number of
\nstores resuming operations along with Ramayana department store.<\/p>\n
Ramayana corporate secretary Hardjanto Salim said the company
\nsuffered an Rp 80 billion (US$11.9 million) loss after 12 of its
\nstores in Jakarta and neighboring towns of Bogor, Tangerang and
\nBekasi were destroyed during last year's unrest.<\/p>\n
On July 31, Ramayana reopened two of its stores in Tanjung
\nPriok in North Jakarta and in Cimone, Tanggerang.<\/p>\n
\"We are planning to reopen three more stores next year,\"
\nHardjanto said.<\/p>\n
He said the only extra security measure the company would take
\nin anticipation of future unrest was the recruitment of local
\ncivil defense (Hansip) members.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of locals, most arriving in groups, packed Cengkareng
\nPlaza on Friday.<\/p>\n
\"I am happy with the reopening of the department store. It's
\nthe only shopping center in this area,\" Wahdidi, one shopper,
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The reopening ceremony on Friday, attended by West Jakarta
\nMayor Sarimun Hadisaputra, featured Jakartan comedian Mandra. The
\ncompany also offered discounts and free samples of products
\nduring the event.<\/p>\n
The company's spokesman, Alan Kamal, said business had not yet
\nreached its optimum level.<\/p>\n
\"Profits will still be small. We need to cooperate with our
\nsuppliers for a joint promotion program in a bid to boost our
\nsales,\" he said.<\/p>\n
According to Alan, the promotion will feature well-known
\nproducts from top suppliers, such as PT Unilever.<\/p>\n
\"In our experience, also involving celebrities in promotion
\nprograms attracts more people to come and buy,\" he said. (03)<\/p>",
