The Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, has spoken out regarding\nthe smoke from forest and land fires (karhutla) that has begun to reach\nneighbouring countries.<\/p>\n
Raja Juli noted that smoke does not possess an Identity Card (KTP),\nmeaning it can spread to other regions. Furthermore, he claimed that\nforest fires are not occurring solely within Indonesian territory.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs can be seen, perhaps it is not detectable here (SiPongi). These\nfires are not only happening in our territory. In Sarawak, forest fires\nare also occurring; it is simply that the wind direction happens to be\nblowing upwards,\u201d Raja Juli told reporters on Tuesday (1\/9).<\/p>\n
\u201cIf the wind direction were from this direction (downwards),\naccording to colleagues from the Environmental Agency, the fires\noccurring there would also enter Indonesia. Because, as it turns as it\nwere, smoke has no ID card,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Raja Juli stated that the government\u2019s main focus at present is\nensuring the safety of Indonesian citizens from the impacts of forest\nfires occurring in several regions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe President has told us that the Indonesian government\u2019s primary\nfocus in handling forest fires is the safety of the Indonesian people,\u201d\nhe said.<\/p>\n
He noted that control efforts are being continuously implemented to\nprevent the occurrence of transboundary haze. However, he also stated\nthat hotspots are not originating solely from within Indonesia\u2019s\nsovereign territory.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat we can maintain or control our forest fires and our smoke so\nthat transboundary haze does not occur, Alhamdulillah. And certainly, as\na society that maintains good relations with our neighbouring countries,\nwe will fight together,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Raja Juli stated that the ranks of the TNI (Indonesian\nNational Armed Forces), Polri (National Police), and Manggala Agni\n(Forest Fire Control Agency) will continue to fight maximally in\nhandling forest fires.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo, we will continue to fight as hard as possible; we will not allow\nany negative impacts or harm to our neighbours.
