Rains to start in October or November: Weather office<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Although the dry season began late this year by
\napproximately one month, the rainy season should begin in most
\nparts of Indonesia around October and November, according to the
\nweather forecast agency.<\/p>\n
\"The rainy season will begin at its normal time,\" Karjoto
\nSantokusumo, the chief of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency,
\ntold reporters yesterday.<\/p>\n
Karjoto said details of the rainy season forecast will be
\nannounced to the public next week.<\/p>\n
He warned, however, that strong east winds are currently
\ncausing high waves of at least two meters high in some parts of
\nIndonesian waters. \"Small ships must particularly be careful,\"
\nwarned Karjoto, citing recent accidents in Bali.<\/p>\n
On Aug. 13, six people drowned and seven others were reported
\nmissing after a passenger boat overturned off the port of
\nPadangbai.<\/p>\n
The seas around the southern area of the equator such as South
\nSumatra are also currently very dangerous, he said.<\/p>\n
Karjoto was speaking after the signing of a Memorandum of
\nUnderstanding between his agency and Australia's Bureau of
\nMeteorology which was represented by its director, John Zillman.<\/p>\n
Also witnessing the signing were Indonesia's Minister of
\nTransportation Haryanto Dhanutirto and deputy head of mission of
\nthe Australian embassy, Murray Cobban.<\/p>\n
The agreement covers cooperation in an international system
\ncalled World Weather Watch Systems and meteorological research,
\nclimate monitoring and seasonal forecasting.<\/p>\n
Cooperation also includes development of software programs and
\ntraining of meteorological staff, particularly working in
\nisolated stations of the agency.<\/p>\n
Zillman said the common climate between Indonesia and
\nparticularly northern Australia, necessitated constant exchange
\nof data, which will be enhanced by more advanced technology
\nequipment facilitated under the cooperation.<\/p>\n
\"This is also made possible by the recent improvement in
\ntelecommunication links between Jakarta and Melbourne,\" said
\nKarjoto.<\/p>\n
The cooperation will hopefully enable more accurate
\npredictions such as drought conditions in both countries, they
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Exchange of data will enable closer monitoring of greenhouse
\ngases and cross-border air pollution, Karjoto said.<\/p>\n
He added that his agency monitors a vast area in a tropical
\nclimate and that neighboring countries such as Australia also
\ndepend on the agency's data.<\/p>\n
\"The cooperation enables Australia to acquire the agency's
\ndata, and we get sophisticated products from their Bureau of
\nMeteorology,\" Karjoto said.<\/p>\n
This, he said, will support the agency in more accurate
\nweather forecasting for the interest of agriculture, aviation and
\nother transportation.<\/p>\n
Karjoto added that the agency is still in the process of
\nadding 400 observation stations to its current 160 stations.<\/p>\n
Both the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency and Australia's
\nBureau of Meteorology are members of the World Meteorological
