Rainfall becomes less predictable<\/p>\n
BANDUNG, West Java (JP): Seasonal rains are becoming less
\npredictable, with the dry season receiving more rainfall than it
\nused to and the rainy season experiencing less, a weather expert
\nsays.<\/p>\n
Zadrach L. Dupe, a lecturer on geophysics and meteorology at
\nthe Bandung Institute of Technology, told The Jakarta Post
\nyesterday that the change may have serious consequences for
\nfarmers and their planting seasons.<\/p>\n
Fisheries and plantations could also be affected, he said
\nduring an international symposium on equatorial atmosphere
\nobservation in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Zadrach said he and his colleagues have spent the last few
\nyears studying rainfall patterns in the country. Their research
\nhas found that while the average rainfall per year has not
\nchanged, the dry season now experiences more rain than usual.<\/p>\n
Zadrach, who studied atmosphere dynamics in Berlin, said
\nIndonesia still cannot determine a more permanent weather pattern
\nbecause its weather data records only go back to 1960.<\/p>\n
He added that the effects of the changing weather pattern must
\nbe studied by experts from various disciplines in order to make
\nrecommendations. Farmers must also be informed of the changes and
\nactions they can take.<\/p>\n
Zadrach said the major floods that recently swept across
\nJakarta and many other parts of the country are not an indication
\nof more rain.<\/p>\n
Some of the floods, he explained, were man-made.<\/p>\n
He questioned the claim by an official in Jakarta that last
\nmonth's flooding was the worst since 1942.<\/p>\n
\"If Jakarta was flooded in 1942 to the same extent as last
\nmonth, it must have been an exceptionally heavy downpour,\" he
