Rain brings with it new problems<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The severe drought may be coming to an end, but
\nIndonesians now have to contend with another problem -- heavy
\nrain which causes flooding and landslides.<\/p>\n
Heavy rain in many parts of the country in the past few days
\nhas caused a loss of livestock and traffic jams, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
The news agency said Monday heavy rain hit Palembang in South
\nSumatra which over the past five months has been blanketed by
\nsmog. The downpour caused gridlock as water reached levels of 25
\ncentimeters, flooding some of the town's main streets.<\/p>\n
Drainage was ineffective as it was stuffed by garbage.<\/p>\n
Mayor Husni told officers in his administration on the same
\nday to be aware of the coming floods and to pay special attention
\nto areas prone to flooding.<\/p>\n
He called on his staff to work together with residents to
\nclean up the drainage and sewage.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, in Bali, rain in the past few days has caused
\nlandslides in the regencies of Tabanan and Karangasem, killing at
\nleast five cows and destroying dozens of hectares of paddy
\nfields, Antara reported Monday.<\/p>\n
In Tabanan, 21 kilometers west of the capital Denpasar,
\nlandslides were reported to hit the subdistricts of Penebel,
\nPupuan and Kerambitan.<\/p>\n
\"We can't yet say how much we have lost from these
\nlandslides,\" a spokesman at the Tabanan regency administration
\ntold the news agency.<\/p>\n
In the villages of Balongan, Mangesta, and Jatiluih of Peneben
\nsubdistrict, the landslides were reported to have also blocked
\ntraffic.<\/p>\n
But it was only temporary and traffic returned to normal after
\nhundreds of villagers worked together to clear up the road.<\/p>\n
The news agency said the worst landslides occurred in the
\nvillages of Kesambi, Kesambahan, and Jatiluih where 300 square
\nmeters of paddy fields were destroyed.<\/p>\n
Landslides in Gunungsari village in Penebel subdistrict
\ndemolished the house of a villager, I Nengah Kartika.<\/p>\n
In Karangasem regency, in eastern Bali, hundreds of Hindu
\npilgrims on their way to Pasar Agung temple on Mt. Agung Saturday
\nwere blocked for some time by a landslide on the Yeh Sah
\nhillside. The group had to take a longer, alternative route.<\/p>\n
In South Sulawesi's capital, Ujungpandang, Minister of Health
\nSujudi warned yesterday against possible outbreaks of diarrhea
\nand dengue during the monsoon season.<\/p>\n
The Environmental Impact Management Agency said yesterday that
\n13 airports in Sumatra and Kalimantan which had been closed due
\nto lingering haze have been reopened as visibility improves.
